Bound by Brotherhood ~ MAY 2-5

Reading Assignment for MAY 2-5 :  Chapter 3-5
Use evidence from the text to support your answer; include page numbers.

One of the most significant passages in the novel appears Chapter Four, when Tim uses his intimate knowledge of Sam to disarm him. Tim knows exactly how to handle his sleeping brother. Tim and Sam are bound by brotherhood, and it is disquieting to see that bond used by one brother to disarm the other.  How would you have handled the situation?  Put yourself in Tim's place, would you have done the same thing or would you have done something different?  Explain your reasons.  How would you have reacted if you were Sam?

Your Comment Should Include:

If I were Tim, I would have taken the gun from him so that father would be saved. I mean, I would rather have my brother be seperated from the gun for a few days rather than having my dad being impaled.

If I were Sam, I would have reacted like he did in the book. My first goal would to take the gun from Tim. Then I would ask him why he had it because I would be skeptical of my little brother stealing a gun.

The fourth chapter in My Brother Sam is Dead has a significant impact on the book. According to this chapter, Tim uses previous knowledge about his brother to get his Brown Bess while sleeping. If I was Tim, I would have handled the situation differently. Instead of rushing to where Sam was, I would have thought everything through. I would have thought what harm do the “Rebels” actually have? Would they actually kill anyone? I would think about my solutions and the possible outcomes while running to find help or advice on the situation.
If I was Sam, finding my own brother with the Brown Bess, I would not have been happy at the moment. My mind would be going a mile a minute with several unanswered questions. Since I just woke up, I probably wouldn’t be thinking straight with jumbles of thoughts mashed together. Nasty, rude thoughts would be going through my head about Tim. The main thing I would be thinking is: why has he betrayed me?

  3. I would have done the same thing tim said.I mean its inbetween my dad living or no gun for 20 minutes. But on the otherhandd would the rebles really kill some one whowasn't harming them?
If i were Sam and I was faced with my own brother stealing the brown bess I would have been preety mad. But who know I might not be thinking strait andI would be saying some rude stuff. But if i were Sam I would stop and think isn' my brother helping the family. But i would still becrazy mad stealing from own brother!

If I was Tim, I would have handeled the situation differently. I would have thought my plans througly and thought of the possible outcomes. I would have also thought if the Rebels were going to kill anyone. I thought that Tim was smart when he used his knowledge about his brother to get the Brown Bess.
If I was Sam, finding my brother with the Brown Bess would scare me at first. "Was he mad and wanted to kill me? Did he want to fight in the war too even at his young age?" The main thing that I would be thinking is: has he betrayed me?

If I were to put myself in Tim’s place, I would choose to do something different. I would have taken the gun just as Tim did but instead of grabbing it and running I would have secured it to my body (pages 53 and 54). Then I would wake Sam up and quickly tell him before he could comprehend what I had just said. Then I would run out the door. My reason is that if Tim did it in the book, and it did not work, I would have to try another way.
If I were Sam, I would have thought, “what on earth is going on and why did my little brother just steal my gun?” I would run after Tim just as Sam did (pages 54 and 55) and ask him what he thought he was doing. I would then let my little brother take the gun. I would also forgive my dad and go back to him. My reason is that my family comes first, and not war.

If I put myself in Timmy's shoes I wouldn't have stolen the gun even though father was about to get killed. I would have woke him up and then told him the situation frantically because it isn't nice to take things that are other peoples possessions.
If I put myself in Sam's shoes I still would've sprinted after him as fast as I could. The thing I would’ve done different was that I wouldn’t have talked him. I would’ve asked what the situation was and then let him go give the gun to father.

If I were Tim, I wouldn’t have done anything differently, when getting the brown Bess from Sam. Tim remembered some really important things about the way his brother sleeps from when they were younger. This knowledge led Tim to get the brown Bess from Sam, while he was sleeping and return it to his father. This was an important task for Tim, because on page 50 the soldiers threaten to kill his father if he didn’t return the gun. If Sam would‘ve woke up while I was taking it from him, I probably would have hit him across the head, so I could away, because talking with Sam would’ve been useless, because on page 58, Sam claims the soldiers don’t shoot people.

If I were Sam, I think I would’ve chased Tim to get the brown Bess back. I would’ve put the police spotlight on him and asked him a lot of questions about him taking the brown Bess from me, and try to understand Tim’s concern for our father. I would’ve returned with Tim to explain that I am fighting in this war and need the gun.

I actually have a similar relationship with my older sister. I know her very well,so I believe I would have played it the sam way. Used her weaknesses against her. It was a very smart thing to do and it worked out in her favor.

Who wouldn't have reacted like Sam in the sense that he ran after Tim? I sure would have. But I might have sooner agreed to bring the gun back. Because if I knew my father was danger I would do anything to stop it.
