I believe the message of the book is that it isn’t always easy to choose a side.
Tim believed in both Sam and his father, but they were divided, and Tim didn’t know what to do. He saw what the war cost his family, but he benefited from it. In a previous post, we discussed page 167, when Mrs. Meeker said, in the words of her husband, “In war, the dead pay the debts for the living.”
In the epilogue, on page 211, Tim wondered if there could’ve been another way to achieve it all and I do too.

I think the theme of book is "with life comes changes". In the very beginning of the book Sam loses his brother to the war, in the way that Sam won't be around as often. Later on he loses his father then sort after his brother again but this time for ever. But these weren't the only changes Tim went through. He had to take on more responsibility. So over the course of the entire book Tim's whole life changes.

I think one of the themes in the book is "theres more than one way to accompilish the same thing". In the beggining of the story, Father askes Sam why they are fighting over taxes, and that there are other ways of lowering taxes. Other people have stressed thier consern to Sam and he never listened. In the end he ended up getting killed. On page 211, it Says Tim wondered if there was another way to achieve the same thing, which is my point

I belive the other theme is "don't bite off more than you can chew". Father thought he was in over his head when he decided to take Tim with him on the trip to sell their goods, and he got captured, inprisioned, and killed. People have warned Sam of the danger of war, but he was to headstrong and joined the army anyway. He ended up wearing rags and no shoes, and getting killed, because he was framed for stealing cattle.
